The filter absorbs them, helps seal a gap between cylinder walls and piston rings, and transfers heat as well. The engine can malfunction if dirt and debris get through to your engine, which can be extremely expensive to fix. Excessive exhaust smoke and engine noises are some of the signs that the filter might need to be replaced.
